RESUMEN

El creciente distanciamiento entre las realidades de la vida social y la expresión jurídica de la ideología republicana fue, a comienzos del siglo XX, la principal característica del encuadre constituido por la oligarquía chilena. En ese contexto se examina los primeros pasos de la conformación urbana de Santiago como ciudad moderna. Se presenta primero un panorama de las corrientes estéticas influyentes y luego se considera los aportes a la modernización urbana de Santiago del urbanista Karl Brunner. Se examina sus propuestas en materia de estructura urbana, habitación popular, transporte urbano y en especial su concernimiento con el espacio público. En este respecto se destaca el pragmatismo de sus concepciones basadas en el urbanismo científico junto con sus propuestas de arte cívico de raigambre hausmaniano.

ABSTRACT

Growing distancement between social life realities and the juridical expression of republican ideology was, at the beginning of XX century, the main issue framed by chilean oligarchy. In this context, the firsts steps of Santiago’s urban conformation as a modern city, are examined. First, a panorama of influential aesthetics mainstreams is presented. Afterwards, contributions of the town planner Karl Brunner to Santiago’s urban modernization are considered. His propositions related to urban structure matters, popular housing, and public transportation are examined, in special concerning public space. In this respect, the pragmatism of his conceptions based on the scientific urbanism it is outstanding, together with his proposition of civic art of “hausmannianan” roots.
