RESUMEN

El texto intenta dar un vistazo preliminar por las principales corrientes de pensamiento occidental sobre el fenómeno urbano en el siglo XX. El recorrido se plantea desde una óptica crítica de la modernidad urbanística, resaltando principalmente, los momentos en que el paradigma racional y funcionalista del urbanismo y la arquitectura es sometido a revisión crítica desde diversas escuelas de pensamiento. Se analizan entre otros aportes, aquellos provenientes desde la sociología urbana marxista, la nueva geografía y los estudios culturales. El texto se concentra, en su última parte, en la reflexión sobre el campo temático del fenómeno urbano en Latinoamérica y Chile, indicando la emergencia de nuevas miradas de corte transdisciplinario.

ABSTRACT

The main streams about the XX century urban phenomenon, within contemporary western thought, are preliminary examined. The critical thought about urbanistical modernity serve as a frame of reference. The attention is focused on the different school of thinking which put in question the paradigmatic moments of rationalism and functionalism of architecture and urbanism. Contributions provided by Marxian urban sociology, the new geography and cultural studies are considered. The thematic field shaped by reflection on urban phenomenon, in Chile and Latin America, is also considered.
