ABSTRACT

This document presents a wide spectrum of the meanings of patrimony, a concept worthy of interest since it enables interpretation of our day-to-day space in the context of modern habitat. Patrimony refers to the collection of inherited goods from a given society´s past. The monument as a singular good has evolved into the concept of cultural good, unraveling ample and complex semantic content. Finally, the introduction of the concept of cultural capital refers to the process of cultural construction with strong ideological content.

From a Latin-American perspective, the cultural patrimony concept has been the focus of recent research where the subjects of landscape, traditions, myths and customs seem strongly linked to patrimony. On an academic level, the interest for this relevant field of study has given birth to course syllabi, graduate degrees and numerous publications.
