MARIO SOBARZO MORALES

ABSTRACT

The author proposes a revision to the visions about the nocturnal - in its relationship with the city -, have developed towns and authors of the western culture. The case of the Roman town is examined, who, through symbols, rites and the form of building their cities, tried to exorcize the idea of the chaos associated to darkness spirits.

After this, it is pointed out how this order search, in front of the fragility in which rested the idea of stability of the empire, influences in the adoption of control measures at social level. All the operations that try to liberate the civilization of the idea of chaos, reflected in the nocturnal, are inherited by the Christianity, being perpetuated in the western culture.

Other visions regarding the night and the darkness are also indicated. These related with Dionysius in which leave the figure of the non luminous liberator, if non sinister "of a darkness that shocks."  This divinity is captured in the city, which becomes scenario of the tragedy.

Finally, with these notions on the nocturnal, the author invites to meditate about how these visions impregnate our historical and daily reality.  Also is outlined how in the contemporary city, certain aspects of our nocturnal become invisible, through rituals of civic transparency.
