ABSTRACT

This paper introduces the presentation by the architect René Lemoine Martinez on November 8, 1992 to commemorate the day of Urbanism.
This debate questions the achievements made over half a century by those promoting the discipline of urbanism. A comparison between some indices of quality of life at the time and the ideals of "Air - Sol - Vegetation" that promotes the theme of urban memorial is made.
At the heart of this discussion is the idea of the current lack of discussion around the concept of the common good. It takes a journey through various texts containing frequent detractors positions over the city. Against this, it reminds Lewis Mumford whose book "The Culture of Cities" serves the author as an argument for a defense of the values that the city must protect, and are questioned in the commemorative moment of this exhibition.
This publication, 20 years after its origin, still owns absolute validity, in the protection of own values of town planning thought.
