RESUMEN
El texto es una introducción a una antología de estudios sobre la formación de la fisonomía urbana de santiago de Chile en los últimos cien años. Se presentan dos textos referidos a la acción pública en materia habitacional. Los textos incluidos elaboran su reflexión en torno a la labor del Estado como promotor de la transformación de la sociedad chilena a partir de 1960.  Se examina la acción del Ministerio de Vivienda y Urbanismo, quien a través de la CORMU construye el nuevo paisaje urbano, imagen-símbolo de una nueva sociedad.
Santiago se transforma en el escenario donde la producción del espacio urbano, realizada a través de instituciones estatales especializadas (CORMU) construye su imagen de futuro. Se cuestiona si estas remodelaciones urbanas, que provienen del ideario político, actúan como  instrumento para la construcción de una utopía social o juegan la función de estética política.

ABSTRACT
The text is an introduction to an anthology of studies about the formation of urban physiognomy of Santiago of Chili, in the last hundred years. Two texts relating to public action in housing are presented. The selected texts prepare its reflection on State work as a promoter of the transformation of Chilean society since 1960.  It reviews the action of Housing and Urban Ministry and through CORMU, built the new urban landscape, an image and symbol of a new society. 

Santiago is transformed into the stage where urban space production, done through specialized State institutions (CORMU), built his image of future.  It is questioned whether these urban renovations, emerging from political ideology, act as a tool for the construction of a social Utopia or plays  the function of political aesthetics.
