RESUMEN

El texto presenta un bosquejo del desarrollo urbano de Santiago, desde su fundación hasta su gran remodelación. Concentra su atención en el siglo XIX y reconoce los principales rasgos de la diferenciación social del espacio y condiciones de vida, expresados en sus distintos barrios. Sobre este telón de fondo se presentan las diversas circunstancias de la génesis y desarrollo del proyecto de la remodelación de Santiago elaborado por Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna. El proyecto causó alarma entre aquellas personas que creían que aquel conjunto urbano era uno de los más agradables y confortables del mundo; sin embargo, ante los ojos del nuevo intendente, la ciudad mantenía un pobre aspecto colonial que era apremiante intervenir para estar a la altura de cualquier ciudad europea y así transformarse en un modelo urbano para las demás capitales sudamericanas. El texto da cuenta de las relaciones entre el discurso de las autoridades políticas, la concepción de las obras de infraestructura, edilicias y de diseño urbano, las medidas de saneamiento de la habitación popular y de control social para el manejo de la ciudad.

ABSTRACT

The text presents an outline of Santiago's urban development, from its foundation until its great remodeling. Concentrates its attention on the XIX century and it recognizes the main features of social differentiation of the space and conditions of life, expressed in their different neighborhoods. On this backdrop are show up the diverse circumstances of the genesis and development of the project of Santiago's remodeling elaborated by Benjamin Vicuña Mackenna. The project caused alarm among those people that believed that urban group was one of the most pleasant and comfortable of the world; however, before the new intendant's eyes, the city maintained a poor colonial aspect that was urgent to intervene to be to the height of any European city and this way become an urban model for the other South American capitals. The text gives an idea of the relationships among the speech of political authorities, the conception of the infrastructure works, buildings and of urban design, the measures of reparation of popular room and of social control for the handling of the city.
